Footsteps, talking, or other sounds trigger the video projection to pulsate. Often, viewers will become participants in this context and begin using their voices to trigger different colors and light effects to emerge. Carnot CycleTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/painting-carnot_cycle2022-11-04T18:19:35Z2022-11-04T18:19:35ZThis painting reminds me of the law of conservation of energy: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It also feels like states of matter are converting from one to another. Transferring paint chips from one surface to another is rather delicate. Things can fall apart at any moment, much like any life circumstance or some of the engineered systems on which we might depend. The Carnot Cycle is a physics concept where energy is transferred, but entropy is neutralized.Sky Composition 2Tom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/painting-sky_composition_22022-11-04T10:15:30Z2022-11-04T10:15:30ZArt is a tuning fork for the human spirit. Color, especially, is a primary mechanism for this. People have psychological and maybe physiological responses to color. For example, many people are happier when exposed to more sunlight, revealing all the hues in the world. I remember when I was a kid, I was given a set of colored pencils as a Christmas gift. I was transfixed by the relationship of all those colors in one place. Now, I'm obsessed with an ongoing practice of "stealing color" by photographing all the captivating relationships I see and using those harmonic relationships in paintings in different ways.Executive Office Toy: Mysterious White PowderTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/sculpture-executive_office_toy_mysterious_white_powder2022-08-08T22:03:30Z2022-08-08T22:03:30ZThis is a small interactive sculpture. It's a perversion of those small, desk toys you might see at stores in a shopping mall (think, clacking balls, zen garden and so on). This one might ask you to think about the origins of certain mysterious white powder epidemics (opioids, cocaine, crack, fentanyl).Echinacea 1Tom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/painting-echinacea_12022-02-13T23:17:04Z2022-02-13T23:17:04ZHere is a small painting of an Echinacea flower. I am intrigued by the problem of realism in painting. To me, realism is a philosophical conundrum. Reality is a unified field of paradoxes. When many artists think of realism, we think of duplicating what our eyes see. How limiting that is. The skill to model what one sees in paint is an academic marker of achievement, but it can become an addiction. It becomes easy to lose sight of talking about the problem of what reality is or could be.
In this painting, I mainly focused on visual perceptions of what you might see. Even if someone were painting what they saw, it would be difficult to ignore distortions in light, color, and myodesopsias (those annoying eye floaters). I've had friends talk about seeing RGB (reg, green, blue) light dots in a dark room, seemingly simulating the rods and cones of the retina. So, it's hard to ignore how much our eyes resemble a camera. I've embellished on some of those distortions in this painting.Tulips Sideways with ObfuscationsTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/painting-tulips_sideways_with_obfuscations2022-02-13T05:42:10Z2022-02-13T05:42:10ZHere is a small painting of Tulips, planted outside of the agency where I used to work in downtown Pittsburgh.
The courtyard (Commonwealth Place Park) outside of Gateway Towers, in Pittsburgh, PA, always had Tulips planted everywhere. I took some photographs of some of these when I had a spare minute. I'm always more interested in the dynamics between the analytical and intuitive/emotional aspects of what's going on, more than depicting "what things look like." So, what's going on here is essentially a pixellated photograph, turned sideways and then used as a background for an abstract composition. Still Life with Apple, June 2021Tom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/painting-still_life_with_apple_june_20212021-07-27T13:21:41Z2021-07-27T13:21:41ZI have another apple still life, which seems to have gone awry somehow. I kept this one dialed back on the bombastic elements. I set out, beginning with the photograph, arranging objects, photographing and changing things, and so on. Then when I found one I wanted to work with, I started to work on some digital manipulation of one of them. I always have an empty ceramic cup, a living or once-living thing, and something that threatens the living thing in my still life paintings. Sometimes I will use these images as a basis for a painting. Clouds are usually fascinating since they transform themselves into things that seem recognizable. But they couldn't be less concerned with what they look like to us. How's that for anthropomorphism. One of many reasons why my head is always in the clouds.Cone of Vision VignetteTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/drawing-cone_of_vision_vignette2021-07-27T21:30:30Z2021-07-27T21:30:30ZI allow formations and concentrations of tonalities to develop. Rock formsTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/drawing-rock_forms2021-07-27T09:06:43Z2021-07-27T09:06:43ZI do what the graphite tells me. I make this statement to myself when drawing. But many times, I'm trying to get out what I see in my mind's eye. Manifesting what one sees in their imagination tends to be somewhat egoist, in my opinion, so I want to remove much of the ego elements as much as possible. But you can't entirely remove yourself from being attached to the earth. Otherwise, you become so "head in the clouds" that you are not capable of surviving or relating. Joseph Campbell (Jung too, I think) would refer to this as transcending the juvenile world of opposites, maintaining a balance in the middle, and becoming a complete person. That's an ongoing challenge. So, while this became an image of rocks, it started as doing what the dust was telling me to do. It began with turning the brain off and then seeing a connection to the earth.Beach InvasionTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/painting-beach_invasion2021-07-27T12:15:07Z2021-07-27T12:15:07ZThis image began with a photograph that I took while at the beach. I was interested in the colors that happen there. The tone of the sand and the bluish water, with the added bright colors of things people bring there, are always engaging. Those people always end up in these photos. However, it looks like I'm taking pictures of them. They end up in my photographs, but it's not my original intent. So, it's as if I'm invading their privacy, which is absurd since we're in a public place. But it is like I'm spying on them. In this one, it looks like the psychological space inhabited by the two women talking is contained in a different area than the child playing. I think there's a question of who is invading who's space. I was more interested in the big blue field and some sand architecture, though.Eating of Grapes, Kaleidoscope, NFTTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/prints-eating_of_grapes_kaleidoscope_nft2021-04-23T01:21:18Z2021-04-23T01:21:18ZKaleidoscopic NFT interpretation of Eating of Grapes painting. There is a lot of activity above us. If you make a study of the sky's color relationships, you have the opportunity to witness a slow fireworks display any time you want it. The point is to distract myself from my preconceptions and see how I might respond to resolve a composition.Landscape with Giant Sleeping PuppetTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/drawing-landscape_with_giant_sleeping_puppet2021-01-15T00:28:17Z2021-01-15T00:28:17ZI am using a variety of methods to snap myself out of intellectualizing in these drawings. It began with a photographic reference, which was going to be used for visual elements throughout the painting. However, I was interested in exploring the composition as an abstraction based on a synesthetic experience of the subject, eating grapes. So what you have is bright colors and juicy explosions everywhere, and little geometric universes opening up in places. There are jewel tones, which are somewhat visual. The composition also has elements that look much like stained glass.Mountain ShadowsTom Estlacktom@estlack.comhttps://www.estlack.com/contacthttps://www.estlack.com/drawing-mountain_shadows2019-05-25T07:45:19Z2019-05-25T07:45:19ZThe combined elements seem to be talking about an eerie mood, emerging when the older generation populates the air with lies (through advertising, popular media, religion, other forms of indoctrination, etc.) while expecting the younger generation to make sound decisions when they get older.Synesthesia 4: Yes. The entire work has 5 movements, and visuals are planned to go with the rest of the music. There are other synesthesia pieces. Two of them are complete with visuals and music. There is a third called Synesthesia Suite. #3 doesn't have any animated visuals yet aside from a score, which is a series of 3 paintings. This fourth piece is almost completely composed (the music is), but the visuals are not yet there. I guess as far as synesthesia goes, I see sounds first and then visuals erupt as a result of sound, but not the other way around. Never thought of it that way. This movement is in 7/4 and then there is a riff in the middle in 4/4.
